Terea FAQ: Everything You Need to Know
1. What are Terea tobacco sticks?
Terea sticks are specially designed heated tobacco units made for use with the IQOS ILUMA series. They contain high-quality tobacco and a unique metal heating element that works through induction.
2. Is Terea available in the United States?
Yes. Following FDA reauthorization in 2026, Terea and the IQOS ILUMA system are being rolled out across the U.S. in select states and premium retail locations.
3. How does the SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEMâ„¢ work?
Unlike older versions that use a heating blade, Terea sticks contain a stainless-steel-coated metal element. The IQOS ILUMA device uses an electromagnetic field to heat this element from within, warming the tobacco without burning it.
4. Are Terea sticks the same as cigarettes?
No. Cigarettes burn tobacco at high temperatures, creating smoke and ash. Terea sticks are heated to a precise temperature to release a tobacco-filled vapor, eliminating combustion.
5. Do Terea sticks contain nicotine?
Yes. Terea sticks contain nicotine, which is naturally present in tobacco and is addictive. They are intended only for adult smokers.
6. Can I use Terea sticks with my old IQOS 3 DUO?
No. Terea sticks are exclusive to the IQOS ILUMA. Using them in older blade-style devices will damage the device, and the stick will not function.
7. Do I need to clean my device after using Terea?
One of the best features of Terea is that it is self-cleaning. Because the sticks are sealed at both ends, no tobacco residue is left inside the holder.
8. How long does one Terea stick last?
Each Terea stick provides an experience similar to a cigarette, lasting approximately 6 minutes or 14 puffs, whichever comes first.
9. How do I know when the session is ending?
The IQOS ILUMA holder will vibrate, and the lights will pulse when you have 30 seconds or 2 puffs remaining.
10. Can I light a Terea stick with a match or lighter?
Never attempt to light a Terea stick with a flame. They are designed strictly for induction heating and contain a metal element that is dangerous if lit conventionally.
11. What Terea flavors are available in the U.S.?
We offer a variety of profiles, including Amber (rounded/nutty), Silver (refined/toasted), Turquoise (menthol), and Sienna (woody/tea notes).
12. Does Terea smell like cigarette smoke?
Terea produces a tobacco vapor that has significantly less odor than cigarette smoke. The scent is discreet and does not linger on clothes or hair.
13. Is there ash with Terea?
No. Because the tobacco is heated rather than burned, no ash is produced.
14. How should I dispose of used Terea sticks?
Once cooled, dispose of the sticks in a general waste bin. Do not litter, and ensure they are kept out of reach of children due to the small metal part inside.
15. Can I use HEETS sticks in an IQOS ILUMA?
No. The IQOS ILUMA is only compatible with Terea. It will not recognize or heat HEETS sticks.
16. Why are Terea sticks shorter than traditional cigarettes?
Terea sticks are designed for efficiency. Since the tobacco is heated and not burned away, you get the same amount of satisfaction from a more compact, specially processed tobacco plug.
17. Is Terea a “Modified Risk Tobacco Product” (MRTP)?
The FDA has authorized IQOS as an MRTP, acknowledging that switching completely from cigarettes to IQOS reduces your exposure to harmful chemicals. However, it is not “safe” or “FDA approved.”
18. Where is the best place to store Terea packs?
Store them in a cool, dry place. Extreme humidity or dryness can affect the vapor quality and flavor.
19. Can I reuse a Terea stick?
No. Terea sticks are for single use only. Once a stick has been heated, the tobacco is spent, and the metal element will not react a second time properly.
20. How do I tell a used Terea stick from a new one?
Check the filter paper. A used stick will have slight creasing around the filter and a faint tobacco vapor stain on the paper.
21. Why won’t my IQOS ILUMA start when I insert the stick?
Ensure the stick is pushed in to the correct depth (the Terea logo should be visible). If it still doesn’t start, your device may need a charge, or “Autostart” might be disabled in your settings.
22. What happens if I swallow a Terea stick?
Seek medical attention immediately. Terea sticks contain a sharp metal heating element that can cause internal injury if ingested.
23. Does Terea help with smoking cessation?
Terea is an alternative for adult smokers who would otherwise continue to use tobacco. It is not designed as a cessation tool or a way to quit nicotine.
24. Are there “Pearl” or capsule flavors in the U.S.?
Flavor availability depends on state-specific regulations. Check our store locator to see the specific menu available in your region.
25. Can I bring Terea on a plane?
Generally, yes, as long as they are for personal use. However, you should check the regulations of your destination country and always keep the device in your carry-on luggage (not checked bags).
26. Is there a “vape juice” inside Terea?
No. Terea uses real tobacco leaves that are ground and processed into a “cast leaf” sheet, which is then rolled into a stick.
27. How much do Terea sticks cost?
Prices are competitive with premium cigarette brands and vary by state due to local tobacco taxes.
28. Do I need to register my device to buy Terea?
While not always required for purchase, registering your device allows us to provide better customer support and manage warranty claims more effectively.
29. Can Terea sticks expire?
While they don’t “expire” like food, we recommend using them within 12 months of the production date for the best flavor and vapor consistency.
30. Who is Terea intended for?
Terea is exclusively for adults (21+) who currently smoke or use nicotine products. It is not for non-smokers, minors, or pregnant women.
